Tayside Adult Health & Lifestyle Survey 2000
Synopsis:
This report describes the findings of the Tayside Health and
Lifestyle Survey carried out during 2000. A 2% sample (5855 people),
selected to be representative of the population of Tayside aged between
16-74 in gender, age, and geographic area, were sent a self-completion
questionnaire. Questions asked about people's general health, diet,
physical activity, smoking habits, alcohol use, use of health services
including contraception and health checks, accidental injuries, sun
safety and about perceptions of stress experienced. Social and personal
factors such as education and employment were also included.
Comparisons with findings from a similar survey carried out in 1994
provide an indication of how health and health behaviours in Tayside
have changed since that time. Where available, figures for Scotland as a
whole (provided by the Scottish Health Survey 1998) have been included
to enable comparisons with the national picture. Political boundary
changes since 1994 have made direct comparisons between 1994 and 2000
for the three local authority areas in Tayside problematic. However for
2000, significant differences in findings between the three areas, where
present, have been highlighted.
Some 3361 people returned completed questionnaires, giving an overall
Tayside response of 61%, which compares favourably with other local
Health and Lifestyle Surveys. Individual responses for the three local
areas within the sample were: Angus 62%, Dundee 57% and Perth & Kinross
64%.
It should be borne in mind that the survey findings are based on
self-reported information. In addition, those who respond to health
related questionnaires may be more health conscious and/or aware than
non-responders. Non-responders in this survey were more likely to be
aged between 16 and 24 years.
