Sampling Sizes
The sample size in lifestyle surveys vary considerably. Some are small (around
1-2,000 responses), some larger (around 5,000 responses) and some very large
(over 20,000 responses). The sample size usually depends on:
- the need for data at either regional, local
authority or lower level
- desired accuracy (if this known)
- costs or available budget.
Clearly, there is a trade-off between sample size and costs. The survey costs
for a survey of 1,000 responses may be around £10,000; for 5,000 responses this
may increase to around £40,000. for an illustration of the trade-off between
sample sizes and costs in a postal survey
