Web-Based Surveys

Arguments For Arguments Against
Cost – web-based surveys can be conducted cheaply. Bias – obvious bias due to internet access. This is becoming less of a problem (with some provisos). Internet access still different across socio-economic groups.
Time – probably the quickest method of collecting data. Sampling Frame – there is no easily available sampling frame of residents’ email addresses. Commercial suppliers can provide high volumes of names.
Resource – little staff resource needed; software to send bulk emails required. Response Rate – 10-20% is an acceptable rate using this method. Response bias is likely to be high.
Geography – easy method for including rural areas / remote communities. Respondent – no guarantee about who has completed the survey.
Design – need to be simple, but routing can be more complex (controlled by computer programme). Good opportunity to use supplementary materials. Literacy – unlikely to include those with low levels of literacy.
