West Midlands Adult Health & Lifestyle Survey
Synopsis:
In November 2000 the West Midlands Partnership for Developing Quality
commissioned MVA to undertake the West Midlands Adult Health and
Lifestyle Survey 2001. The Survey covered the following Health Authority
areas:
- Birmingham Health Authority;
- Coventry Health Authority;
- Herefordshire Health Authority;
- North Staffordshire Health Authority;
- Sandwell Health Authority;
- Shropshire Health Authority;
- Walsall Health Authority; and
- Wolverhampton Health Authority.
In order to provide details of health, diet and lifestyle, and to
track any changes since the 1995 Survey, a postal survey with a
representative sample of the population of the participating Health
Authorities was required.
The Survey was designed to be an important source of information for a
wide variety of purposes in the long-term, but the main objectives were:
- To track whether or not there has been a reduction or increase
in the prevalence of cigarette smoking in men and women aged 16 and
over;
- To track whether or not there has been a reduction or increase
in the percentages of men and women aged 16-64 who are obese (Body
Mass Index greater than 30);
- To track whether or not there has been a reduction or increase
in the amount of fat, particularly saturated fat, in people’s diet
and to ascertain any dietary habits which have changed;
- To track whether or not there has been a reduction or increase
in the proportion of men drinking more than 21 units of alcohol per
week and the proportion of women drinking more than 14 units of
alcohol per week;
- To track whether or not there has been a reduction or increase
in the amount of physical activity undertaken; and
- To track whether or not there has been an increase, reduction or
no change in the number of people who suffer from sunburn.
