Somerset Lifestyle Survey 1997
Synopsis:
Some factors in our lifestyle contribute to our health. In Somerset
we looked at some of these factors in 1987 and 1992 and we repeated this
in 1997. In each of these surveys approximately 2% of the adult
population of Somerset Health District were randomly selected and asked
to complete a postal questionnaire. Questions focused on smoking,
alcohol, food, height and weight, physical activity and in addition in
1997, on accidents.
The aim of the Somerset Lifestyle Survey is to investigate the
prevalence of risk behaviours associated with specific health conditions
(e.g. Coronary Heart Disease). The most important of these behaviours
concern smoking, alcohol use, physical activity and eating habits. There
is now no doubt that altering our behaviour can also alter our risk of
developing many diseases. The issue for health authorities and for
people working to promote health is how best to encourage others to make
this change.
Questionnaires were sent to 8,500 people across Somerset Health
District. Following two reminders, administrative checks and data
validation, 4,477 records were available for analysis. This represented
a final response of 52.7%. A small proportion of questionnaires failed
to reach their intended individual because the person could not be
successfully contacted.
