Alcohol, Crime and Disorder: A Study of Young Adults
Home Office Research Study 263The research findings presented in this report provide an evidence base
to help inform the development of policies to address the problems of
crime and disorder arising from binge drinking. The research, based on
new secondary analysis of the 1998/1999 Youth Lifestyles Survey (YLS)
and in-depth interviews with 27 young people, focuses on young people
aged 18 to 24 years. It explores their drinking behaviour and to what
extent this is associated with criminal and disorderly behaviour. More
specifically, the research addresses the following objectives:
- to identify the extent of ‘binge’ drinking among young people, which
groups of young people are more likely to engage in this pattern of
consumption, and why young people ‘binge’ drink;
- to identify the extent to which young people become involved in
criminal and disorderly behaviour during or after drinking alcohol;
- to examine whether ‘binge’ drinking is associated with offending
behaviour; and
- to examine the links between ‘binge’ drinking and illicit drug use.
The findings from this report are complemented by further qualitative
research, based on focus groups, designed to examine in depth the nature
of young adults’ drinking patterns and the social consequences,
particularly criminal and disorderly behaviour.
