Oldham Young Peoples Survey
Synopsis:
Although the survey population was intended to be young, and to share
other characteristics in common, different strategies were adopted to
survey young teenagers and young adults. The majority of school-age
young people (i.e. below 16 years of age) were surveyed through seven of
Oldham’s fifteen state secondary schools; 196 Year 8, 9 and 10 pupils
completed a questionnaire. 16-19 year olds were contacted through
Connexions, primarily through the distribution of the questionnaire to
young people attending courses at Oldham College. Young adults aged
19-25 were surveyed through their involvement in centrebased youth and
community activities, and through the two Cottoning On projects,
Energize and Positive Vibrations. 2,500 questionnaires were printed and
distributed in June and July 2002. 421 had been returned by December.
The questionnaire generated quantitative data from which a variety of
tables, charts and statistics were produced.
