Dorset & Somerset Lifestyle Survey 2002
Synopsis:
Lifestyle surveys in the form of a self-completion questionnaire were
mailed to 12,500 randomly sampled individuals across Dorset and Somerset
in October 2002. Following two reminders, administrative checks and data
validation 7095 records were finally available for analysis.
During the first two Somerset surveys, 1987 and 1992, and the Dorset
surveys, the questions focused on coronary heart disease (CHD) risk
factors, (at the time referred to as ischaemic heart disease (IHD)).
The 1997 Somerset survey included questions on accidents in addition
to the ‘core’ risk factor topics (cigarette smoking, alcohol
consumption, diet, physical activity). The wording of individual
questions differed slightly between the Dorset and Somerset
questionnaires and so comparability with national surveys was the
priority when deciding the wording for the 2002 survey questions.
The 2002 survey has been expanded again and now includes aspects of
general/mental health and home safety. The data collected on accidents,
introduced in 1997, is now routinely collected, so questions from the
1997 survey have been modified and are now incorporated into the home
safety section.
